Is diabetes genetic or hereditary?

Both, and the distinction matters. Type 2 diabetes is polygenic: hundreds of small inherited variants act together, layered on top of diet, weight, activity and age. Most of India's epidemic is type 2, which is where lifestyle and a polygenic risk score have the most to offer. A rarer form, MODY, is caused by single-gene changes and can run strongly through families at young ages, worth flagging to your doctor if several relatives were diagnosed young and lean.

Why Indians carry more inherited diabetes risk

South Asians develop type 2 diabetes earlier and at lower body weights than most other populations.
