What BRCA testing is

What a negative result means

• No harmful BRCA variant was found, reassuring, but not zero risk. Everyone retains ordinary population risk.
• If a specific variant is known in your family and you tested negative for that variant, it is a stronger "true negative."
• If no family variant was known, a negative result is less conclusive, and a strong family history may still warrant closer screening.

Family implications

Because these variants are inherited, a positive result is never just about you:

• Each first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child) has a chance of carrying the same variant.
• Relatives may choose to consider testing, ideally after speaking with a genetic counsellor.
• Results can carry emotional weight and practical questions. Sharing them is a personal decision, and support from a counsellor helps.
